Cocktails and colors: DAAC mixes art and alcohol for hands-on good time

Art appreciation is a hands-on and “spirited” affair in downtown Decatur from October through January.

Students are encouraged to grab their favorite cocktail glass and a paintbrush to join in a variety of mixed media courses at The Decatur Area Arts Council (DAAC).

The Cocktails and Creations series is for those 21 and older, but artists are encouraged to bring a friend and a favorite cocktail and snacks to any of seven evening classes that the DAAC will provide all the materials and supplies for a fee that is generally $25 for members and $30 for non-members.

Two courses are offered in October with colorful autumnal themes. Two in November featuring watercolor and decoupage techniques and then winter projects will be in full swing in December and January at the DAAC building at 125 N. Water St. in downtown Decatur.

Cocktails and Creations sessions

Oct. 10: The Witches Hat Party is the perfect way to prepare for Halloween. It’ll be a hat decorating and mask-making party complete with spooky snacks treats and drinks.

Oct. 21: Celebrating the glamorous abstraction of Gustav Klimt is the theme of the Klimt Tree of Life Paint Like Me session. This mixed media class will use real gold leaf and paint to your own tree of life.

Nov. 6: The cocktail mixers will be back as creativity abounds in a Painted Silk Scarves class focused on watercolor techniques. But instead of just enjoying your adult beverage, organizers say one technique used may incorporate salt and alcohol for a unique textured effect. Margaritas anyone?

Nov. 14: Cups and coasters and upcycling will be the theme with the Decoupage Cups and Coasters with Winter Succulents lesson. It will likely be a perfect round of merry gift making for the holidays.

Dec. 12: For last minute holiday gift potential a Winter Mosiac Tile class is a chance to create a simple tile using colorful glass and other materials. Wine or beer? How could one go wrong?

Jan. 16: After the holidays, there will be an Intuitive Painting on Canvas session that will incorporate cocktails, paint and relaxation as a way to bounce back from the holiday hustle and bustle. That session is only $20 for non-members.

Jan. 30: Going into Valentines Day, the perfect pairing will take place with a “Wine and Chocolate – Cupcakes on Canvas” class. You bring the wine, while the cupcake will be furnished to decorate with vanilla or chocolate buttercream frosting and a variety of fun and fancy toppings. That class is $23 for non-members.
