August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean

Event Details

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson passed away in 2005, but this Illinois Theatre production carries on his legacy with direction by Wilson collaborator Chuck Smith and a newly composed and choreographed “City of Bones” section in collaboration with Dance at Illinois.

Gem of the Ocean is the first installment of The Pittsburgh Cycle, Wilson’s 10-play chronicle of the African-American experience in the 20th century. Citizen Barlow, a young African-American man, arrives in Pittsburgh from the South years after the Civil War. A woman named Aunt Ester, who is said to be 285 years old and possess healing powers, decides to help Barlow along on his life’s journey.
