Sure your Labor Day weekend agenda is already packed with backyard gatherings, blowout sales advertised on TV by some carnival barker, and maybe even an old-fashioned parade celebrating, you know, the actual labor movement. But we have two good reasons why you should carve out some time for a road trip to Illinois Amish Country.
Actually, make that three good reasons.
1. The dreaded Amish Mafia doesn’t come near this neck of the woods
They like it in Pennsylvania, thank you very much.
2. The 47th Arthur Amish Country Cheese Festival
They had us at “cheese,” which will be available in many forms and in copious amounts — enough to sustain events including the National Cheese Eating Championships and the International Cheese Curling Championships. But there’s a lot more for the whole family to see, do (and eat) at this three-day long festival. More info and directions here.
3. The 7th Annual Chet Kingery Memorial Bluegrass Festival
Local guitar great Chet Kingery passed away in 1998, and the festival named in his memory has been bringing together nationally renowned bluegrass groups every years since 2013. The location — Arthur’s The Great Pumpkin Patch — is also home to a bakery, a sweet shop, food court, farm animals and many other fun activities! Go here for more info and directions.
